This version of the data collection is no longer distributed by ICPSR. These data are currently available at German Election Study, October 1965.

Additional information may be available in Collection Notes.

1) This study contains a weight variable (V3) that produces a representative sample of voting-age citizens of the Federal Republic when used in analysis. The weight variable corrects for sex and age biases in the sample, and was constructed by comparing the age by sex distribution of the sample with the census distribution. 2) The codebook is provided by ICPSR as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site.

This study focused on the respondents' voting behavior in the 1961 and 1965 elections in the Federal Republic of Germany and the reasons for their voting decisions in 1965. The respondents' reliance on and confidence in a variety of political information sources were also measured, as well as their levels of political interest. The survey included scalometers used to evaluate the major political figures of 1965. Semantic differential measures and scalometers probed the respondents' opinions of the major political parties. Demographic variables include sex, age, marital status, religious preference, education, occupation, and membership in voluntary associations.

A stratified, multistage, random sampling procedure was utilized in this study. The sample was drawn in three stages: first, the sampling points were designated, then households were chosen within each sampling point, and finally, individuals were selected within each household. The definition of the population excluded persons living in group quarters, institutional populations, and people with no place of residence.

Voting-age citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany, excluding West Berlin, living in private households and registered in the community central registry of inhabitants ("Einwohnermeldekartei").
