Project Description

Summary

This collection comprises census tract-level data for California from the 1970 Census. The data contain 20-, 15-, and 5-percent sample population and housing characteristics including education, occupation, income, citizenship, vocational training, and household equipment and facilities.

(1) The number of cases (tracts) varies by state. For the whole United States, there are about 35,000 tracts. (2) The codebook is provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) File. The PDF format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed with the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet. (3) The codebook comprises Parts 1 and 2 of the 1970 Census Users' Guide, published by the Bureau of the Census. (4) In the 1970 Census Users' Guide, these data are called "Fourth Count Population Summary Tape, File A" and "Fourth Count Housing Summary Tape, File A."
