Summary

This study is a collection of machine-coded events using the coding scheme employed in BEHAVIORAL CORRELATES OF WAR, 1816-1975 (ICPSR 8606) (BCOW) to create a continuous time series of data on interstate interaction covering the Levant area (countries bordering on the eastern Mediterranean sea). The collection was produced by a computer program, developed at the University of Kansas, which reads in Reuters News Service reports and parses the first sentence (the lead) into the three main components (subject, verb, and object). The Kansas Events Data System (KEDS) program then recodes these components according to the BCOW coding scheme. This data collection is the first using the BCOW scheme that is completely machine-coded. Each yearly dataset contains four variables: date, source (subject), target (object), and action (verb). Dictionary files that match the actual person, group, or event to the coded value are provided. In addition, the principal investigator has provided information on linking the datasets for longitudinal analysis.
