The process of Euro-American settlement of the South Carolina Piedmont, and elsewhere, established historically and specially contingent land-use patterns that continue to influence the trajectories of social-ecological landscapes. This study explores the settlement patterns of the Euro-Americans on a landscape previously shaped by Native American populations for thousands of years.

Data was compiled from a mosaic of US Forest Service land purchase survey maps dated from 1934-1948. These US Forest Service purchase tract survey records were digitized into an ArcGIS parcel fabric. Where US Forest Service records were missing data, paper survey maps from the Union Country Historical Society Atlas, which contained traced Land Grant plats, were digitized and the images were rubber-sheeted into the parcel fabric. Land Grant survey boundaries were then digitized from the images and the appropriate attribute data (names of grantee and grant date) were added to the shapefile.
