The purpose of this study was to describe what newly licensed registered nurses (NLRN) working in hospitals learned about quality improvement in their education programs and workplaces. The survey was administered to nurses working in a hospital who participated in the second wave (ICPSR 36812) of the Newly Licensed Registered Nurse Survey series. This was part of a ten year panel survey. Quality improvement topics covered by the survey include:
- patient-centered care
- evidence-based practice
- standardized practices for restrain and seclusion, infection control and pain management
- use of information technology or strategies to reduce reliance on memory
- participation in analyzing errors and designing system improvements
- use of national patient safety resources, initiatives or regulations
- use of specific quality improvement models

- Additional information about the survey is available on the RN Work Project website.
- The data file for this study can be merged with any of the data files in the Newly Licensed Registered Nurse Survey series by matching on the common ID variables IDNUMBER or ICPSR_RANDOM_ID.
- The variables IDNUMBER, STRATA, CLUSTER, and Q31 have been "MASKED by ICPSR" in the public-use file (DS1), but are available in the restricted-use file (DS2).
- The Principal Investigators modified four variables in the original data file prior to depositing it with ICPSR. Section 5 of the User Manual details how these variables were recoded. The variables Q24_DM, Q26_DM, Q27_DM, and G_AGE are available in both the public-use and restricted-use files. For these four recoded variables there are no differences between the two file versions.

Original sample was of a random selection of newly registered nurses in selected metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) and rural areas. Respondents for this study were selected from those who participated in the second wave of this data series AND worked in a hospital setting. Please see section 1 of the User Manual for additional information.

Survey questions focused on the areas of:
- level of preparation in quality improvement topics for their basic nursing program and current employer
- personal participation in quality improvement tpics during the past 12 months
- hours of quality improvement training received during the past 12 months
- efficacy of training
- current employment setting / characteristics
- demographics (age and gender)
Most of the questions are categorical or ask for a dichotomous "Yes/No" response. The section of quality improvement training hours is numerical. Verbatim responses to open-ended questions in the questionnaire were not included in the originally deposited data file. Please see section 4 of the User Manual for data edits that the Principal Investigators made to the data file prior to deposit.

2017-11-27 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created online analysis version with question text.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
