The American Samoa Demographic Profile Summary File contains data on population and housing subjects derived from questions on the 2010 American Samoa Census questionnaire. Population subjects include age, sex, children ever born, citizenship status, disability status, educational attainment, ethnic origin or race, family type, grandparents as caregivers, group quarters population, health insurance coverage status, household type and relationship, employment status and subsistence activity, work experience, class of worker, industry, occupation, place of work, journey to work, travel time to work, language spoken at home and frequency of language usage, marital status, nativity, year of entry, place of birth, parents' place of birth, earnings, income, remittances sent abroad, poverty status, residence in 2009, reason for moving, school enrollment, vocational training and veteran status. Housing subjects include air conditioning, battery-operated radio ownership, computer ownership, gross rent, internet service, kitchen facilities, mortgage status, number of rooms, number of bedrooms, occupancy status, occupants per room, plumbing facilities, selected monthly owner costs, sewage disposal, source of water, telephone service available, tenure, type of building materials, units in structure, vacancy status, value of home, vehicles available, year householder moved into unit and year structure built. The data are organized in 121 tables which are presented at four levels of observation: American Samoa as a whole, districts (and two separate atolls), counties and villages. Every table cell is represented by a separate variable in the data which are segmented into four data files.

Together with the data files, the Census Bureau prepared a codebook and additional documentation, a Microsoft Access database shell, and a HTML-based application for displaying the tables called the Interactive Summary Level Access and Navigation Database (ISLAND). ICPSR supplies all of these components, except the codebook, in three ZIP archives. The first archive contains the data files, the second the database shell and additional documentation and the third contains ISLAND. The codebook is provided as a separate file.

  1. The first ZIP archive (DS1) contains four data files and a "packing list" which describes the contents of the archive. The data files and packing list file are plain text files.

  2. The second ZIP archive (DS2) contains the Microsoft Access database shell and three files with additional documentation. Two of the documentation files are provided in Word format and one is provided in both Word and PDF formats.

  3. The third ZIP archive (DS3) contains the ISLAND package and a README file in two formats (Word and plain text) with instructions on how to use the package. Itself provided as a ZIP archive, the ISLAND package contains a folder called "AS" with 11,981 html files, a stylesheet file (CSS) and a subfolder with a JS file. To display a table with ISLAND unzip the ISLAND package in a folder of your choice, open the file index.html in the "AS" folder with Microsoft Internet Explorer, select the desired table and geographic area from the pull-down menus on the displayed index page and click the "Submit" button.
