The Eurobarometer series is a unique cross-national and cross-temporal survey program conducted on behalf of the European Commission. These surveys regularly monitor public opinion in the European Union (EU) member countries and consist of standard modules and special topic modules. The standard modules address attitudes towards European unification, institutions and policies, measurements for general socio-political orientations, as well as respondent and household demographics. The special topic modules address such topics as agriculture, education, natural environment and resources, public health, public safety and crime, and science and technology.

This Eurobarometer is part of wave 75.1 and covers the special topic of women in the EU. Questions in this survey pertain to gender equality and work, including gender pay gap and paternal leave. Other questions addressed women's representation in politics and violence against women.

Demographic and other background information collected includes age, gender, nationality, marital status and parental relations, left-right political self-placement, occupation, age when stopped full-time education, household composition, ownership of a fixed or a mobile telephone and other durable goods, difficulties in paying bills, level in society, and Internet use. In addition, country-specific data includes type and size of locality, region of residence, and language of interview (select countries).

  1. The original data collection was carried out by TNS Opinion and Social on request of the European Commission between February 9 and March 6, 2011.

  2. This collection is being released in two parts: Part 1 contains the original files provided by GESIS; Part 2 contains the ICPSR-processed files.

  3. The number of respondents for Belgium (n=913) corresponds with the duration of fieldwork and the given time frame for the official reporting for the module QA1 to QA15. All other questionnaire modules, QA16 to QA21, and QB to QE, are available in a second dataset (ICPSR 34266) which includes the entire sample for Belgium (n=1025).

  4. No standard EU and trend questions included.

  5. The codebook and setup files for this collection contain characters with diacritical marks used in many European languages.

  6. Access to GESIS data and documentation, including the GESIS DOI, for Eurobarometer 75.1 EP can be found through the GESIS Data Catalogue. Additional information on the Eurobarometer Survey Series and the Eurobarometer data can be found at the GESIS Eurobarometer Web site and ZACAT, respectively.
