This special topic poll, fielded November 15-21, 1999, queried members of the high school graduating class of 2000 on various topics. Respondents were asked a series of questions about their post-high school plans, including college attendance, job opportunities, and their anticipated quality of life compared to that of their parents. A series of questions addressed the fears and responsibilities facing respondents, including whether they felt more like an adult than a child, whether they enjoyed their current age, whether they felt they had more responsibilities than their peers, the amount of time they spent on family responsibilities such as running errands, cleaning the house, and cooking for him/herself and/or the family, and knowledge of the family's finances. Respondents were asked to describe their experience with and efforts to cope with serious tragedies such as divorce, the death of a loved one, natural disaster, the loss of personal possessions, personal or family drug or alcohol problems, serious injury from a car accident or shooting, suicide, HIV/AIDS, pregnancy, and abortion. Additional topics covered the respondent's relationship with his/her parents, access to and knowledge of computer technology, Internet navigation, email, pagers, electronic organizers, and cellular telephones, and teenage sexual activity. Background information on respondents includes age, race, sex, religion, counseling/therapy history, parents' education, alcohol/marijuana use, sexual history, possession of a driver's license and/or car, employment status, number of siblings, parents' employment and marital status, and public/private school attendance.
