This special topic poll, fielded October 12-13, 1998, sought New York State residents' views on the upcoming November 1998 elections and other political issues. Respondents were asked whether they intended to vote in the elections, specifically in the senatorial and gubernatorial races. They were asked for their opinions on President Bill Clinton, New York Senator Alfonse D'Amato, Democratic senatorial candidate Charles Schumer, New York Governor George Pataki, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Peter Vallone, Liberal Party gubernatorial candidate Betsy McCaughey Ross, and Independent Party gubernatorial candidate Thomas Golisano. Respondents were asked to assess D'Amato's achievements while in office, to compare D'Amato's and Schumer's integrity, and to declare for whom they intended to vote. They were also asked to assess Pataki's achievements while in office, to compare Pataki's and his challengers' integrity, and to declare for whom they intended to vote in that race. Those queried were asked to identify which of the following issues were most important to them when making electoral decisions: crime, economic development, education, the environment, health care reform, tax cuts, abortion, fiscal responsibility, integrity of the politicians, or expressing support/opposition to Clinton. Respondents were asked whether they supported the referendum that would permit New York City public monies to be spent on building a new Yankee Stadium in Manhattan, and whether that referendum had strengthened their desire to participate in the election. An additional question asked respondents whether they believed that impeachment hearings should be held to decide the fate of Clinton. Background information on respondents includes age, sex, race, ethnicity, political party, political orientation, education, religion, and family income.
