ICPSR and IEA Announce Distribution of ICCS 2009 and 2016 Data via CivicLEADS
The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) are pleased to announce their collaboration in distributing two major datasets. ICPSR’s Civic Learning, Engagement, and Action Data Sharing (CivicLEADS) archive is now making the 2009 and 2016 International Civic and Citizenship Studies (ICCS) freely available to the public. The data have been—and continue to be—distributed through IEA’s website as well. The two organizations have been working together for several months to release the data via CivicLEADS in order to offer researchers more options for accessing and analyzing the data. Among the benefits of multiple distribution streams are:
- Increased discoverability – CivicLEADS has study- and variable-level search tools powered by the metadata ICPSR creates during the curation process, in consultation with IEA;
- Increased utility – between IEA and CivicLEADS, the data files are available in SPSS, SAS, Stata, R, ASCII, and tab-delimited formats, allowing for researchers who use a wide variety of analysis tools to easily analyze the data; and
- Increased comparability – CivicLEADS archives civic education and engagement data from numerous countries and diverse disciplines, and all the data can be searched and compared using ICPSR’s online tools.
These two studies are major contributions to international understanding of student civic learning and attitudes. With data from a combined 234,000 students as well as educators and schools from 38 countries in 2009 and 24 nations in 2016, these studies provide researchers a unique opportunity to explore longitudinal change across and within national boundaries. This research potential is expanded further when the ICCS data are used in conjunction with IEA’s 1999 Civic Education Study, available from both IEA and CivicLEADS. To mark the release of these data on CivicLEADS, IEA and ICPSR are hosting a webinar November 19, 2018 at 10am EST (4pm CET) about the studies, their data, and their potential for use in secondary analysis. Given the international nature of these data and the webinar, we understand that this time will not be convenient for all participants; the time was chosen to facilitate collaboration between our colleagues in Hamburg and Ann Arbor.
