The following are updates from SAMHDA:

New or updated files

The online data analysis system (DAS) version of the 2003 National Survey
on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) has been released and is available from
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/cgi-bin/SDA13/hsda?samhda+04138-0001. To
download the data in ASCII format with SAS, SPSS, or Stata set-ups, select
the "Download a customized subset of variables/cases" option form the DAS.
The NSDUH is also available from our FastTrack system in SPSS portable and
SAS system formats at http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/SAMHDA/fasttrack.html.
Please contact our staff with any problems accessing or downloading the files.

The archival version of the NSDUH should be released in the next few days.
The archival version includes the ASCII data file; SAS, SPSS and Stata
set-up files; and the PDF codebook.

SAMHDA holiday schedule

The archive will be closed December 24 through January 2. Help desk calls
and emails received during this time will be returned on January 3.

Web site outage

The SAMHDA Web site will be unavailable December 27 and 28 while the data
lines that supply our building will be moved as part of a new construction
project. We will continue to have a very limited temporary network
connection, so it may be possible to access our web site during this
period. However, slower page loads, download speeds, etc. are likely. We
apologize for any inconvenience this outage will cause.

File compression format and file naming conventions change

We have converted the compression format of our files from Gzip to WinZip.
All files are now compacted using Windows Zip compression and bear the .zip
file name extension. Please let us know if you have questions or experience
any difficulties unzipping SAMHDA files.

In an effort to simplify filenames and download procedures, we will change
the way we identify data and documentation files beginning in early
January, as follows:

- All files will include Windows-style suffixes
- Files will have simple text names, rather than acronyms or codes
- Files will include the study number and dataset number (where
appropriate) in the file name
- Files will be bundled into study- and dataset-level folders

Examples of the new file naming system can be found at
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/org/announce.html#filenames.

Ongoing

We appreciate the appropriate citation for analyses using data obtained
from SAMHDA. Each SAMHDA study description and codebook includes a
suggested bibliographic citation for the data. For more information on
appropriately citing electronic data files, see
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/org/citation.html.

We welcome the submission of citations for publications based on our data
holdings for our online citations database. Use the Web form on the
following page for submitting citations:
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/SAMHDA/ref-form.html. You may submit papers,
book chapters, etc. that are not yet published and we will track and add
them to the database once they are published. To access the citations
database, select the "related literature" link for a given study or series.

Call our toll-free helpline or email us with any questions or problems
regarding our data holdings, online data analysis system, or web site.
