** Recent updates:
The 1995-1999 Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) files have been updated on
the online data analysis system (DAS). The updated 1996 and 1997 files are
also available from the archive. The 1995, 1998, and 1999 archive files
will be available by early next week. The updated files are from the latest
data extract (April, 2001 for all files except 1995, which is from July,
2001) and include codes that were previously collapsed or excluded for
variables such as ethnicity, race and PMSA. The new files also include all
records rather than a sample of records and a state indicator variable for
state comparisons (e.g., Illinois vs. all other states). The '98 and '99
files include minor variables corrections. To access the TEDs files
(archive and DAS), see the following page:

** Stata Data Definition Statements (DDS):
You can obtain data definition files for Stata (the Stata "do-file") for an
entire data set or for a customized sub-set using the online data analysis
system (DAS). Follow these steps:
(1) From our homepage, click on "Online Analysis"'
(2) Select the study (or series) for which you need Stata data definitions;
(3) If you have selected a series, click on the year or file that you want
(each file must be done separately);
You should now be at the initial input screen for the DAS
(4) Select the last item in the menu list "Download a customized subset of
variables/cases" and hit start;
(5) The next screen is titled "SDA Customized Subset of Variables/Cases"
and it has several sections; under the section "Select FILE(S) to
construct", the default selections are "data file", no delimiter, and
"codebook"; change these options if needed;
(6) Select data definitions for Stata (and/or other DDS files if desired);
(7) If you want the data definitions for the entire data set, go to the end
of the page where variables are listed by grouping; the default for each
group is "none", change this to "all" for each grouping;
(8) If you want a data definition file for selected variables and/or
records, adjust the options according to what you want and make sure to
select "data file" at the top of the page under "Select FILE(S) to
construct". If you select "some" for a variable grouping, later you will be
prompted to select specific variables from the grouping. Note that you may
select a filter variable or type in the names of specific variables if you
know them.
(9) When you are finished with your selections, return to the top of the
page and hit "Continue";
(10) If you have selected "some" for a variable grouping, you will be
prompted to select specific variables within the grouping on the next
screen; do this by holding down the control key and using your mouse (left
click) to make your selections from the list(s) provided; when you are
finished, hit "Continue";
(11) The next screen, "Check the Subset Specifications" lists all of the
options you have selected; confirm that they are correct and then hit
"Create the Files";
(12) On the next screen, "Download Files", left click on the hypertext link
for each file to view it, or right click on the link and choose "Save link
as" to save the file to a disk or your hard drive.
(13) The hypertext links on the input screens provide links to help pages
for each option, or you may phone our helpline or email us for assistance.
Most but not all of our files are available on the DAS. See the following
page for a listing of SAMHDA files on the DAS:
