I read your question again and think I failed to be specific enough. There
is no standard structure for processing languages for codes. It is
dependent upon the InstrumentType which declares it's software. The code
needs to be written in the language that can be processed by the software.
The first example you provided (from questionExample.xml) was for a paper
survey, therefore the code was understandable by the instrument. If the
other example is for a paper document the code is also appropriate, but
the *'s make no sense for inclusion as they are (if anything)
presentation. We are looking at how enumerator/interviewer instructions
are included in the instrument and I would think the use of *'s should be
handled there.
