hi wendy,
sorry it took a bit longer to get to this.
fyi, here's what i sent to the UOG group. i think the first section
about "our message.." is probably the most relevant for the SRG-TIC(?)
please forward whatever you think revelant.
look forward to immersing myself in the collective tomorrow.

hi everyone,
i've been having a fantastic data/ddi summer camp here in the beautiful,
air-conditioned ICPSR facilities.
mary and i have met and discussed DDI with various people and have come
up with a few proposals for the group to consider that supplement the
ideas discussed in our last conference call:
our message should be selling the DDI (as opposed DDI 2 or 3):
it is too complicated to introduce and educate someone about DDI3. or
confuse them with an introduction to 2 vs. 3. our strategy should be to
sell the DDI. the vast majority of potential users will most likely be
satisfied with 2. however, a small, but growing, number of users will
need the power of 3. adopters should have a transparent, seamless
experience with DDI. therefore, a high priority tool would allow
adopters to use the DDI and "make visible" DDI 3 only if needed.
we need a "DDI 101" or "intro to DDI" page on the DDI web site:
the DDI web site should be a powerful resource for outreach, education,
and promotion of the DDI. we need a quick, easy-to-digest overview and
introduction to the DDI for the interested beginner, which can help them
get their brains around the DDI, yet not overwhelm or intimidate them
with a lot of abstract jargon. the DDI 101 page should whet the readers'
appetites for more detail or complexity, which can be referenced with
appropriate "see X for more details" links.
we need a brochure that targets potential users:
this should be a glossy document that has a catchy cover to get people to
open it. each subsequent page should prime the reader to continue
reading while telling the potential DDI user/funder/evangelist "What DDI
is about and why it's important."
DDI Usability & Outreach Google Groups Space (ddi-uog)
we've created a protected common space where the group can
deposit powerpoints and add commentary,
add to the list of potential targeted audiences,
compile a calendar of conferences and other events that we might want to
do some outreach,
work on documents, such as the brochure or "DDI 101" page,
getting started in our ddi-uog group space
you will receive an email invitation with instructions for joining this
group space. every member has permissions to add and edit pages to the
space, upload files, and invite other members. once you successfully
register and login to the group space, you can reference their help
pages, or dive right in (their "navigation menu" is on the right: Home,
Discussions, Members, Pages, Files)
we've created five initial pages and peppered it with text from our last
conference call, as well as some powerpoints, a 1st draft of a brochure,
etc. please take some time to look our space over and figure out how to
work in the space. the goal of the space is to enable the group to
create a collective effort for successful DDI outreach and usability.
please "take ownership" of any existing areas/pages (or add new ones)
that you are interested in pursuing. you can "discuss" any page.
as time goes on, we should evolve "best practices" for effective group
space use, as well as evaluate whether this group space tool is useful
for our purposes.
although google groups has a "discussion" tool, we should probably
continue to use the existing list for discussion (unless the group
decides to migrate).
send any questions, problems.
good luck!
ron
