Can we get a clear explanation of this process with examples?

Question from Sanda:
7. Finally, I have not looked too closely at "add, replace, delete", but
just as a more general enquiry - if we identify the piece we are
replacing/deleting then, we still keep it, yes? as a physical piece - so
that it can be retrieved if we wanted to look at the history of
sections? I suppose this feature will be prominent in marking up
lifecycle info? If we have a producer version of the study description,
and an archive version (later) then we keep both and reference the older
one in the "replace"?
