I'm working at ZUMA (Centre for Survey Research and Methodology) in Mannheim, Germany. Here are my answers to the three questions. In an additional email I make a more detailed proposal for a structure for collections of surveys. 1. Which comparative studies you are currently working with are supposed to be documented with DDI? German Microcensus as scientific use file Description: The microcensus is the official representative statistics of the population and the labour market, involving every year 1% of all households in Germany (370,000 households / 820,000 persons). Links: Federal Statistical Office Germany: http://www.destatis.de/themen/e/thm_microzen.htm GESIS/ZUMA: http://www.gesis.org/en/social_monitoring/microdata/data/department/microcensus/ MISSY (Microdata Information System, in development, in German) http://www.gesis.org/Dauerbeobachtung/Mikrodaten/Daten/MISSY/MISSY_index.htm 2. Which topics do you want to be integrated in the DDI-standard? See proposal in separate email. 3. Do we want an enhanced DTD or could we think of a meta-DTD, which works as a kind of "parantheses" for single XML-documents of a study group or family? (In German something can be a parantheses for subordinate things, meaning that it holds them together. I could not think of an English equivalent for this phrase.) Enhanced XML Schema with a description level for collections on top of current DDI structure. See proposal in separate email. I have attached one documents to this mail. It is a draft of a list for topic #1. Please check, if you can work with it. The list includes one example. The appropriate questions would be: 1. Who does the comprison? 2. When in the study life cycle is the comprison being done? 3. What is compared or designed to be compared? 4. How is the comprison being done? 5. Why is the comparison done? 6. Where is the comparison being done? As a starting point for the second list Wendy offered a document that she put together for the Structural Reform Group. The URL is: http://www.pop.umn.edu/~wlt/arofan/GROUPING.htm How should we procede? Shall I collect your work and set up two lists for next Monday? This leads me to the question who will participate in next weeks call? Or better who won't? The most actual change regarding the discussion on definitions is the second (type of studies). Best wishes Reto P.S. This is a last minute post. Sorry for that. Adding a legend to the drawings, some text was added, which is redundant to the document in some degree. So there are now two approaches to the topic, one textual, the other graphic. I have given a look at the grouping information Wendy has sent to the group. It seems that the CDG is mainly concerned by overall structures, as Wendy has pointed out. We still have to decide where we want to go to as a subgroup.
