Immigration, Immigrants and Health Conditions, Health Status, and Policies: Examining Multilevel and Multidimensional Models and Approaches
This workshop is designed to work with researchers who examine health disparities/conditions, and health equity as it pertains to immigrant populations. A significant part of America's changing demography lies with the growth and composition of contemporary immigrants to the U.S. A vast majority of immigrants are individuals and families from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Immigrants can be differentiated as refugees, legally or formally admitted immigrants, and undocumented.
Topics covered include the following: "the immigrant (epidemiological) health paradox"; health status and access factors; the roles of culture, acculturation, and language; U.S. health policies, socio-political structures, and immigrants; capturing and measuring the multi-dimensional immigrant experience; transnational ties and health; health and countries of origin; data resources and limitations; and analytical approaches incorporating multi-level models.
Prerequisite: Prospective participants should have a demonstrated interest in health and immigrant populations, with good analytical and conceptual skills.
