Registration for the 2017 Summer Program will open in early February, 2017. Please check back at that time.
Need proof that you attended a workshop? The ICPSR Summer Program provides all participants in our four-week sessions and/or three- to five-day workshops with a certificate of participation confirming their completion of the course.
The curriculum of our four-week sessions contains workshops and lectures. Workshops form the core of our four-week curriculum, with lectures serving as important supplements. Our participants generally select one to two workshops, depending on their interests, background, and scheduling demands, as well as one or more lectures. Participants are welcome to sign up for, and attend, as many courses (workshops and lectures) as they like during the session in which they are enrolled.
There are no class size limitations on any of the courses offered during the four-week sessions.
Participants can request EITM certification for selected four-week workshops.
Participants in our four-week sessions register for courses in one of two ways: as "Program Scholars," or as students at the University of Michigan.
Registering as a Program Scholar
The vast majority of participants in our four-week sessions register as "Program Scholars." The only course fee you pay as a Program Scholar is the registration fee to ICPSR (which does not include the cost of textbooks). As a Program Scholar, you can attend as many workshops and lectures as you like during the four-week session in which you are registered. Past Program Scholars have included graduate students, faculty, and researchers. University of Michigan students can also register as Program Scholars.
Program Scholars do not pay tuition to the University of Michigan. Additionally, Program Scholars do not receive official academic credit or a formal transcript from the University of Michigan.
The ICPSR Summer Program can provide Program Scholars with two documents confirming their participation. First, all Program Scholars can request a Certificate of Participation listing the workshops and lectures they attended during a four-week session.
Second, the Summer Program can provide Program Scholars with a grade letter memorandum reporting their completion of a four-week workshop. A grade letter memorandum states the grade you received in the workshop, based on the instructor's evaluation of your work and participation. Program Scholars must participate fully in a workshop (i.e., attend all classes and complete all written course requirements) in order to receive a grade letter memorandum. The ICPSR Summer Program does not issue grade letter memorandums for four-week lectures or 3- to 5-day workshops.
Many Program Scholars use their grade letter memorandums to obtain academic credit for ICPSR Summer Program courses at their home institutions. Typically, participants make prior arrangements with their academic advisor or home institution faculty to register for a readings course or independent study at their home institution. Following the participant's successful completion of the workshop, the academic advisor or sponsoring faculty member uses the ICPSR-issued grade letter memorandum to assign appropriate credit in the readings or independent study course. Please note that ICPSR only provides the information about the appropriate letter grade; the academic credit must be assigned by the home institution. Program Scholars should definitely check in advance with their own academic advisor to make sure that this option can be used.
Registering as a University of Michigan Student
Every year, a handful of University of Michigan students choose to register for our four-week workshops through the University of Michigan in order to receive official academic credit toward their degree. University of Michigan students who choose this option do not register as a Program Scholar and do not pay the ICPSR registration fee. Instead, they pay tuition directly to the University of Michigan through Wolverine Access. The hourly tuition rate is set by the University of Michigan registrar.
For non-University of Michigan students who wish to receive official academic credit, they can enroll in the University of Michigan as a "Summer Guest." This option requires admission to the University of Michigan's Rackham Graduate School for the summer. Please note that the tuition for Summer Guest enrollment is very high (about $6,000 to $12,000). Details about the exact tuition is available at the Office of the Registrar Tuition and Registration Fees page. Click on the chart for 'College of Literature, Science & the Arts' and the bullet for 'Graduate and Interdepartmental'.
Participants who wish to register for our four-week workshops through the University of Michigan should contact us for additional information and instructions. University of Michigan students who do not wish to obtain official academic credit can register as Program Scholars.
Three- to Five-Day Workshops
Registration in a three- to five-day statistical workshop is on a per-course basis. That is, a participant registered for one three- to five-day statistical workshop may not attend another three- to five-day workshop, unless she or he registers for that other workshop.
Three- to five-day statistical workshops have limited class sizes (generally 20-25 participants), due to classroom facilities and instructor preferences. Registration will be confirmed after full payment of fees, on a first-come, first-served basis. When a three- to five-day workshop reaches its capacity, we will create a waiting list of interested applicants. We will then contact any unpaid registrants, who will have ten days to pay the full registration fee. If they are unable to complete payment of the registration fee, we will withdraw them from the workshop and inform the first person on the waitlist that a seat has become available. We will continue this process until all registrants have paid and the workshop is filled.
Academic credit is not available for any of our three- to five-day workshops.
Enrollments in some of the substantive workshops are granted on a competitive basis. When this is the case, it will be mentioned in the course description. For such competitive workshops, applicants may be required to submit supporting materials as part of their applications. Any such supporting materials should be uploaded to the Summer Program Portal.
NOTE: The fees for the 2017 Summer Program have not yet been set. We will update this information as soon as possible.
2016 Fee Schedule

There is an additional discount for participants who register for both four-week sessions.

Discount for Returning ICPSR Summer Program Participants
If you participated in a previous ICPSR Summer Program, you will receive a 15% discount on your registration fee in this year's ICPSR Summer Program. This discount is available to anyone who took either four-week classes or short workshops in any ICPSR Summer Program, last year or earlier. The discount will be applied to the fees for both statistical short courses and the four-week sessions in the current year's ICPSR Summer Program. You don't have to do anything special to receive the discount. When you register, you will be asked about your previous participation in the ICPSR Summer Program. Upon verification of the information you provide, the discount will be applied to your fees automatically.
Discounts for Enrolling in Two or More Statistical Three- to Five-Day Workshops
Want to take several of our statistical three- to five-day workshops? Participants who register for two or more of our three- to five-day statistical workshops will receive a 15% discount on their total registration fee.
In order to receive this multiple-enrollment discount, you must register for the workshops through our portal and then, before making your payment, send us an email to email@example.com with your name and "Multiple Short Workshop Discount" in the subject line. Once we verify your enrollment and apply the discount, you will be able to make payment for the workshops.
This discount only applies to enrollments in statistical three- to five-day workshops. It does not apply to registrations for the four-week sessions or to registrations for short workshops with discounted or waived fees. If fee payments are made across several installments, then the discount will be applied to the final payment.
