Privacy Policy

Thank you for visiting the SAMHDA Web site and for reviewing our Privacy Policy. Our policy is clear:

We collect no information about you, other than information automatically collected and stored (see below), when you visit our Web site unless you choose to provide that information to us.

Information Automatically Collected and Stored

When you browse through any Web site, certain personal information about you can be collected. We use a tool called Google Analytics external link to collect information about use of this site. Google Analytics collects information such as how often users visit this site, what pages they visit when they do so, and what other sites they used prior to coming to this site. We use the information we get from Google Analytics only to improve this site. Google Analytics collects only the IP address assigned to you on the date you visit this site, rather than your name or other identifying information. We do not combine the information collected through the use of Google Analytics with personally identifiable information. Although Google Analytics plants a permanent cookie on your Web browser to identify you as a unique user the next time you visit this site, the cookie cannot be used by anyone but Google. Google's ability to use and share information collected by Google Analytics about your visits to this site is restricted by the Google Analytics Terms of Use external link and the Google Privacy Policy external link. You can prevent Google Analytics from recognizing you on return visits to this site by disabling cookies on your browser.

Personally Provided Information

You do not have to give us personal information to visit our Web site, download data or documentation, perform online analysis, request user support, or use any of SAMHDA's services.

If you wish to take advantage of additional functionality on the SAMHDA Web site (such as our notification services, saving files for later download), you may create a MyData account. Creating a MyData account entails filling out a brief form that requests the following information:

  • Email address
  • MyData password (you create this)
  • Name
  • Organizational affiliation (student, faculty, staff, job title, etc.)
  • Department/field
  • Which statistical package you prefer
  • Whether or not we can share your name, email address, and download information with your institution's appointed ICPSR representative, if applicable

After filling out the form, you will be asked your email address and MyData password for subsequent downloads, but will not be asked to fill out the form again. We may also contact you infrequently to notify you of changes in access or privacy policies.

If you choose to provide us with additional information about yourself through an e-mail message, form, survey, etc., we will only maintain the information as long as needed to respond to your question or to fulfill the stated purpose of the communication.

Disclosure

SAMHSA does not disclose, give, sell or transfer any personal information about our visitors, unless required for law enforcement or statute.

Intrusion Detection

For site security purposes and to ensure that this service remains available to all users, we employ software programs to monitor traffic to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information, or otherwise cause damage. In the event of authorized law enforcement investigations, and pursuant to any required legal process, information from these sources may be used to help identify an individual.

Systems of Records

Information originally collected in traditional paper systems can be submitted electronically, i.e., electronic commerce transactions and information updates about eligibility benefits. Electronically submitted information is maintained and destroyed pursuant to the Federal Records Act, and in some cases may be subject to the Privacy Act. If information that you submit is to be used in a Privacy Act system of records, there will be a Privacy Act Notice provided.

Definitions

Cookies are files that a Web site can place on your computer. A cookie file contains unique information that a Web site can use to track such things as your password, lists of Web pages you have visited, and the date when you last looked at a specific Web page, or to identify your session at a particular website. A cookie file allows the Web site to recognize you as you click through pages on the site and when you later revisit the site. A Web site can use cookies to "remember" your preferences, and to record your browsing behavior on the web. Although you can prevent Web sites from placing cookies on your computer by using your browser's preference menu, disabling cookies may affect your ability to view or interact with some Web sites.

An "Internet Protocol Address" or "IP Address" is a series of numbers that identifies each computer and machine connected to the Internet. An IP address enables a server on a computer network to send you the file that you have requested on the Internet. The IP address disclosed to us might identify the computer from which you are accessing the Internet, or a server owned by your Internet Service Provider. Because it is machine-specific, rather than person-specific, an IP address is not, in and of itself, personally identifiable information.
