Analyze Data Online

Online data analysis allows users to:

  • Produce analysis results very quickly (within seconds), even for large datasets with thousands of cases and variables
  • Create statistical tables from the research data without downloading the data file

NAHDAP data are available for online analysis free of charge. To access, users must login to ICPSR with a free ICPSR MyData account or an existing Google, LinkedIn, or Facebook account and agree to the Terms of Use.

SDA, the Simple Crosstab/frequency Feature, and Quick Tables online data analysis options below use the Survey Documentation and Analysis (SDA) statistical software developed and is maintained by the Computer-assisted Survey Methods Program (CSM) at the University of California, Berkeley. The Maps are created using Map Data.

Online Data Analysis Using SDA

SDA allows users to explore and analyze the data without having to download the data and does not require familiarity with a statistical software package. Users may also create custom subsets of the data, e.g., subset of cases and/or subset of variables and download the subsets.

With SDA, users can:

  • Analyze the data online, i.e., use the data and software from the NAHDAP Website so the data and statistical software need not be on the data user's computer
  • Perform various types of analysis: frequencies and crosstabulation, comparison of means, correlation matrix, comparison of correlations, multiple regression, logit/probit regression
  • Search for variables of interest in a dataset
  • Review frequencies or summary statistics of key variables to determine whether the data have the needed information to conduct more analyses
  • Review frequencies or summary statistics for missing data
  • Produce simple summary statistics for reports
  • Recode and create new variables
  • Subset variables or cases into an SPSS, SAS, Stata, or comma-separated ASCII dataset for download (easy to do even with large data collections and saves time and storage when using personal computers)
  • Export results for use in spreadsheets and presentations
  • Browse the online codebooks

Important Note:The dataset and HTML codebook for use with SDA may not contain the same variables as the dataset and PDF codebook that are downloadable from a study's download web page. To access the Full Study Documentation, use the Full Study Documentation link available under the Codebook tab. Data available in SDA are also available in the Simple Crosstab/frequency Feature.

Simple Crosstab/frequency Feature

This feature presents a streamlined interface for generating frequencies for one variable or for building a table of two variables. This tool is helpful to determine if the data have the needed information or enough valid cases to warrant more analyses. Tables and graphs for reports can also be generated.

With the Simple Crosstab/Frequency tool, users can:

  • Produce tables and graphs for any variable from a datasets available for use with this tool
  • Search for variables of interest in a dataset using the drop-down menu in the Row, Column, and Control fields
  • Review frequencies or summary statistics of key variables to determine whether the data have the needed information to conduct more analyses
  • Review frequencies or summary statistics for missing data
  • Produce tables and graphs for reports
  • Revise the display of the table and graph using options in the left panel of the output screen
  • Copy results and insert them into documents

Note: The weight variable appropriate for the selection of variables will be preselected if statistical weighting is required

Important Note: The dataset and HTML codebook for use with SDA may not contain the same variables as the dataset and PDF codebook that are downloadable from a study's download web page. To access the Full Study Documentation, use the Full Study Documentation link available using the Browse Codebook link. Data available in the Simple Crosstab/frequency Feature are also available in SDA.

Quick Tables

This feature allows users to generate custom crosstabulations (2-way tables) from a pre-selected subset of the variables in the study. Users can also apply a filter so the table will include only a selection of cases and can specify chart options.

With Quick Tables, users can:

  • Produce custom tables and graphs using variables in a drop-down menu
  • Filter the selection of cases (e.g., ages(18-24)
  • Select chart options
  • Revise the display of the table and graph using options in the left panel of the output screen
  • Copy results to insert into documents

Maps

Maps provide a visual exploration of available datasets with geographic variables (e.g., U.S. State) that can be used with a U.S. map. Selections are made with drop-down menus. Color-coding enables quick visual identification of a region or state by category (e.g., percent).

With Maps, users can:

  • Explore information on topics and time periods from a dataset as displayed on the U.S. map
  • Use color-coding to identify individual regions or states by category (e.g., percent)
  • View the information from the map as a table
