Add Health Agreement Materials

Change in application procedures for contracts to use Add Health restricted-use data (pdf)

Add Health restricted-use codebooks and dataset descriptions are available on the Add Health website.

Submitting a New Application for Restricted Data Access  ↓

Users should be aware that Add Health data is subject to three levels of restriction: Level 1 restricted data (sensitive data subject to regular restrictions), Level 2 restricted data (very sensitive data subject to heightened restrictions), and Level 3 restricted data (the most sensitive data subject to the most stringent restrictions). For more information on how to obtain these data, read the sections below.

Level 1 Restricted Data (Regular Restrictions)

Level 1 restricted data includes sensitive information and thus restrictions have been placed upon its access. Users who wish to access Add Health Level 1 restricted data must submit an application via ICPSR's online Data Access Request System (IDARS)

View a sample of a Level 1 Restricted Data Use agreement (PDF 598K)

The application fee is $800 for individuals at ICPSR member institutions and $850 for individuals at non-member institutions. A list of ICPSR member institutions is available. All new agreements include Wave IV data.

Application fees are payable to the University of Michigan via personal or institutional checks or by credit card. For checks, please mail these to:

Level 2 Restricted Data (Highly Restricted)

Level 2 restricted data include highly sensitive information and thus require very specific data and computer security and a separate agreement. Level 2 restricted data includes Romantic Pairs Data and HIV data—for more information regarding how to obtain these data, read the sections below.

Romantic Pairs Data
Only one person can be on the Romantic Pair data agreement. The applicant must also specify the other Add Health data they require to conduct the research with the Romantic Pair data. In addition, the CD on which the Romantic Pair data are sent must be returned within one month of the researcher loading the data to the specified computer identified in the Romantic Pair data agreement.

If you receive any of the Romantic Pairs data, you cannot receive the HIV data.

Users who wish to access Add Health Romantic Pairs data must e-mail the DSDR Team at dsdr@icpsr.umich.edu

HIV Data
Only one person can be on the HIV data agreement. The applicant must also specify the other Add Health data they require to conduct the research with the HIV data. In addition, the CD on which the HIV data are sent must be returned within one month of the researcher loading the data to the specified computer identified in the HIV data agreement.

If you receive the HIV data, you cannot receive any of the Romantic Pairs data.

Users who wish to access Add Health HIV data must e-mail the DSDR Team at dsdr@icpsr.umich.edu

Level 3 Restricted Data (Most Restricted)

Level 3 restricted data include the most sensitive Add Health data and therefore access to these datasets is severely restricted. The only level 3 restricted data is the Education Transcript Data—for more information on obtaining these data, read the section below.

Education Transcript Data [Secure Data Enclave Only]
The Education Transcript Data may be examined by approved investigators only on-site at ICPSR's secure data enclave in Ann Arbor. Analysis of these data is closely monitored to protect confidentiality.

Add Health enclave data cannot be used in conjunction with the Add Health HIV or Partner data.

Please refer to the section on this page titled "Submitting a New Application for Restricted Data Access" for more information on accessing IDARS. There is no charge for transferring the agreement to a new institution and the administrative fee for initiating a new agreement is waived.

Researchers can transfer their Add Health agreement to another PI within the same institution for no additional fee.

To do so, follow these steps:

If the data are going to remain in the same data storage location:

Before leaving the institution and/or giving responsibility to the new PI, the current agreement PI should terminate his/her agreement by sending the following to DSDR:
