2009 Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) Released
The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) is a nationally representative public health surveillance system that continuously monitors hospital drug-related emergency department (ED) visits and drug-related deaths reported by select coroner and medical examiner offices across the country.
SAMHSA is now making the 2009 ED DAWN public-use data and documentation files available for download through the SAMHDA website. Variables in DAWN provide details on the ED visit, including type of case, case disposition, drug involvement, route of administration, and the number of unique drugs reported. The 2009 ED DAWN includes information for up to twenty-two (22) drugs reported in the ED visit; an increase of six (6) from the 2008 DAWN. SAMHSA is planning to also release DAWN data for 2004 to 2007 in the upcoming year.
