Summary statistics on travel to work are contained in this data file. For each geographic area described in the file, information is provided on location of residences, location of workplaces, demographics, and employment of the work force. Included are data on the occupation, industry, and earnings of workers, plus data on means of transportation, travel time, and workers with public transportation disabilities. Demographic information includes the age, race, sex, civilian/armed forces, and Spanish origin composition of the work force.

Universe: The universe of this study consists of all persons age 16 and older in the United States who were employed and at work during the 1980 census reference week.

This file was originally created by the Census Bureau with a logical record length of 2,046 characters. Since characters 901-2,046 consisted enitrely of blank filler, ICPSR has trimmed the file to a record length of 900 characters. "Places" and Minor Civil Divisions are identified by numeric codes only. Area names can be obtained from the CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1980 [UNITED STATES]: MASTER AREA REFERENCE FILE (MARF) 2 (ICPSR 8258).
Sample: This file contains data for all central cities, places of 25,000 or more population, and (in New England) Minor Civil Divisions.
