The Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) series was designed to provide comprehensive information on various aspects of postsecondary education in the United States and its territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Northen Marianas, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside the United States. Data are available for both public and private two-year and four-year institutions. The HEGIS Institutional Characteristics component for 1983-1984 sought data on basic characteristics from institutions of higher education. The data include information on name, address, and telephone number of the institution as well as information about accreditations, state and city demographics, calendar system, program types, enrollment figures, student services, tuition and fees, room and board, and admission requirements.

(1) The original data received from NCES was a hierarchical data file with multiple records per case. The data have been reformatted into a rectangular file with one record per case, in order to be compatible with the current statistical software packages. (2) The accreditation code variables (ACCDCD#) in the original data file supplied by NCES were coded as PIC S9(3) COMP-3. ICPSR has recoded these values into their ASCII numeric equivalents.

The accreditation code variables (ACCDCD#) in the original data file supplied by NCES were coded as PIC S9(3) COMP-3. ICPSR has recoded these values into their ASCII numeric equivalents. An ICPSR codebook, as well as SAS, SPSS, and Stata setup files have been added to the study. The title of this study has been altered.
1985-01-11 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
