Principal Investigator(s): Arce, Carlos H., University of Michigan. Survey Research Center. National Chicano Research Network
This survey was a pretest conducted for the purpose of identifying people of Mexican descent living in Detroit, Michigan for later inclusion in a more comprehensive national survey. This pretest survey was also conducted to develop an appropriate and valid measurement instrument for subsequent screening and national surveys. The pretest was administered to 474 respondents from February to August of 1978 in a Detroit neighborhood. The questionnaire elicited information on the ancestry of household residents from the adult co-heads or single heads of households. The survey identified 128 households with persons of Mexican descent who were then eligible for later interviewing.

Scope of Study
Date of Collection:
Universe: Persons living within two Census tracts in Detroit, Michigan.
Data Types: survey data
Sample: A probability sample was selected within two Census tracts in the city of Detroit, Michigan. The tracts contained a high proportion of Spanish heritage people. The overwhelming majority of these was known to be of Mexican descent. All residential housing units in the 39 city blocks in the two tracts were listed and a sample of 698 housing units was systematically selected for he screening interview. Of these, 609 were occupied and in 474 of the occupied units the screening interview was conducted.
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created online analysis version with question text.
Original ICPSR Release: 1984-03-18
- 2007-03-05 The OSIRIS dictionary has been removed. The SAS and SPSS setup files, as well as the codebook have been updated. A Stata setup file, and SAS and Stata supplemental syntax files have been added.
