This study, conducted November 1-10, 1947, interviewed respondents about their party identification, 1948 voting intentions, issue positions, and major personal problems of the immediate past or anticipated in the near future. The respondents' perceptions of President Harry Truman's stand on specific issues and their own opinions were also assessed. In addition, respondents evaluated Truman's general performance as president and his relationship to certain groups. Open-ended questions tapped satisfaction or dissatisfaction with Truman's policy toward Russia, taxes, cost of living, and European recovery. Demographic information includes sex, age, race, socioeconomic status, education level, occupation, political party preference, labor union affiliation, and type of residential area (e.g., urban or rural).

The original data file contained two records per case and was reformatted into a data file with one record per case. Therefore, column locations for the variables listed in the data collection instrument are no longer valid.

Character values were converted from string to numeric. Responses coded as "INAP" were recoded to 88 and responses coded as "NA" were recoded to 99.

ICPSR added a unique sequential record identifier variable named CASEID.

National quota sample. Quotas with respect to age, sex, race, and quality of housing were filled. There is a slight upward socioeconomic status bias, and also a bias in favor of those most likely to be at home and most willing to be interviewed.

2011-06-29 Converted string values to numeric. SPSS, SAS, and Stata setup and system files were added. Question text was also added to the codebook.
1984-06-19 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
- Performed recodes and/or calculated derived variables.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
