The Filipino American Community Epidemiological Study (FACES) is a research project of Asian American Recovery Services, Inc. of San Francisco, California. The four-year study, whose formal title is Alcohol-Related Problems among Filipino Americans, was concluded in 1999. It provides information and data about the health of Filipino Americans of the San Francisco Bay Area and the City and County of Honolulu. The interview asked randomly chosen Filipino American respondents in these two geographic areas about their health, alcohol consumption, mood state, physical symptoms, cultural background and sociodemographic information. The purpose of FACES was to study alcohol and stress-related behaviors of Filipino Americans. Demographic variables include gender, age, race, education level, marital status, household income, military service, and religious preference.

Subject Terms: alcohol abuse, anger, depression (psychology), drug abuse, emotional states, epidemiology, ethnic discrimination, ethnic identity, gambling, health behavior, health problems, job stress, life events, medical care, racial discrimination, religious behavior, social support, wealth
Date of Collection:
Unit of Observation: individual
Universe: Filipino Americans living in the San Francisco Bay Area and the City and County of Honolulu. Total number of respondents is 2,305.
Data Types: survey data
Data Collection Notes:
String/character variable formats: Variables with widths of 255 in the original dataset have been reformatted to the respective variable length in order to produce the full product suite. For values greater than 244, there may be some truncation.
Numeric variable formats: Variables with widths of eight in the original dataset have been reformatted to match respective variable length. The data itself has not been modified.
Respondents' confidentiality: Variables A15, A17, A33, A35, A48, A54FO, W1 were blanked for confidentiality. One to two values in variables A18, A20, A38, A48A, D66C, I9A1 were also blanked.
Variable recode: One to two values in variables G67, H47, L28, Q10, V18 have been recoded to remove the hardcoded asterisks. Variables filter_$ and G530 were renamed to filter1 and G53O, respectively. This was done to create the ICPSR product suite and to match documentation.
Mode of Data Collection: computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI)
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
- Created online analysis version with question text.
- Performed recodes and/or calculated derived variables.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
