  1. (1) The data contain high ASCII, accented Spanish characters. (2) Users are encouraged to check the NCES homepage for additional information on this collection. (3) The case count is 89,988, not 88,981 cases as described in the documentation. The difference is due to the number of closed schools (1,007). Schools that were open in 1994-1995 but were closed the following year were kept in the records for one year. The variable STATUS95 indicates the number of schools closed. (4) The codebook and instruction manual are provided as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet.

ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
