Common Core of Data: Public School Universe Data, 1995-1996 (ICPSR 2470)
Principal Investigator(s): United States Department of Education. National Center for Education Statistics
This dataset contains records for each public elementary and secondary school in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, United States territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands), and Department of Defense schools outside the United States for 1995-1996. Records in this file provide the National Center for Education Statistics and state identification numbers, name and ID number of the agency operating the school, name, address, and phone number of the school, school type (regular, special education, vocational education, alternative), locale code (seven categories from urban to rural), number of students by grade and ungraded, number of students eligible for free lunch, and number of students by five race/ethnic categories.

Scope of Study
Subject Terms: demographic characteristics, elementary schools, ethnicity, high schools, junior high schools, middle schools, public schools, race, school districts, school enrollments, students, teachers
Date of Collection:
Universe: All public elementary and secondary schools in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, United States territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands), and Department of Defense schools outside the United States.
Data Types: census/enumeration data
Data Collection Notes:
(1) The data contain high ASCII, accented Spanish characters. (2) Users are encouraged to check the NCES homepage for additional information on this collection. (3) The case count is 89,988, not 88,981 cases as described in the documentation. The difference is due to the number of closed schools (1,007). Schools that were open in 1994-1995 but were closed the following year were kept in the records for one year. The variable STATUS95 indicates the number of schools closed. (4) The codebook and instruction manual are provided as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet.
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Original ICPSR Release: 1998-08-24
- 1999-11-02 The SAS data definition statements have been corrected and updated, with one implied decimal point (reported to the nearest tenth) added to two variables (FTE95 and PUPTCH95).
