Current Population Survey, October 2007: School Enrollment and Internet Use Supplement (ICPSR 24401)

Alternate Title:  CPS, October 2007

Principal Investigator(s):

Summary:

This data collection is comprised of responses from two sets of survey questionnaires, the basic Current Population Survey (CPS) and a survey on the topics of School Enrollment and Internet Use in the United States, which was administered as a supplement to the October 2007 CPS. The supplement questions were jointly sponsored by the Census Bureau, the National Center for Education Statistics, and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.

The CPS, administered monthly, is a labor force survey providing current estimates of the economic status and activities of the population of the United States, for the week prior to the survey. Specifically, the CPS provides estimates of total employment (both farm and nonfarm), nonfarm self-employed persons, domestics, and unpaid helpers in nonfarm family enterprises, wage and salaried employees, and estimates of total unemployment.

The October 2007 supplemental survey queried respondents on school enrollment for all persons in the household aged three years and over. Supplement data includes information collected on current grade at public or private school, whether currently attending college full- or part-time at a two- or four-year institution, year last attended a regular school, year graduated from high school, grade retention, and whether any business, vocational, technical, trade, or correspondence courses were ever taken. Respondents were also queried on Internet and computer use, particularly if members of the household use the Internet, and how access to the Internet is obtained.

Demographic variables include age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, veteran status, educational attainment, occupation, and income.

Scope of Study

Subject Terms:   census data, colleges, community colleges, computer use, demographic characteristics, education, educational background, employee benefits, employment, full-time employment, higher education, Hispanic or Latino origins, households, income, industry, Internet, job change, job satisfaction, labor (work), labor force, occupational status, occupations, part-time employment, population characteristics, population estimates, private schools, public schools, school enrollments, unemployment, work, work experience, working hours

Geographic Coverage:   United States

Time Period:

  • 2007-10

Date of Collection:

  • 2007-10-14--2007-10-20

Unit of Observation:   individuals within housing units

Universe:   The CPS universe was made up of all persons in the civilian noninstitutionalized population of the United States living in households. The October 2007 supplement universe included the full CPS sample comprised of all people three years old or over. Moreover, the Internet Use items were asked of the full CPS sample, three years old or over, who access the Internet.

Data Types:   survey data

Data Collection Notes:

Users are strongly encouraged to refer to the User Guide (produced by the Principal Investigators), which contains not only information about the basic CPS survey, but also detailed technical documentation specific to the School Enrollment and Internet Use Supplement. In particular, Attachment 8 of the User Guide contains the supplement questionnaire, and Attachment 18 contains user notes.

Some edited universe statements for variables are defined in either the basic or supplement record layout, which are located in Attachments 6 and 7, respectively, of the User Guide.

ICPSR removed all FILLER and PADDING variables from the data. As a result, the column locations in any ICPSR-released data product (e.g., codebook and setup files) will have column locations that are not consistent with locations described in the User Guide.

Methodology

Sample:   A multistage probability sample was selected to represent the universe of approximately 55,000 households.

Weight:

The data contain eight weight variables:

  • Household Weight -- HWHHWGT -- Used in tallying household characteristics.
  • Family Weight -- PWFMWGT -- Used only in tallying family characteristics.
  • Longitudinal Weight -- PWLGWGT -- Found only on adult records matched from month to month (used for gross flows analysis).
  • Outgoing Rotation Weight -- PWORWGT -- Used for tallying information collected only in outgoing rotations.
  • Final Weight -- PWSSWGT -- Used for most tabulations, controlled to independent estimates for (1) States; (2) Origin, Sex, and Age; and (3) Age, Race, and Sex.
  • Veteran's Weight -- PWVETWGT -- Used for tallying veteran's data only.
  • Composited Final Weight -- PWCMPWGT -- Used to create BLS's published labor force statistics.
  • Supplement Weight -- PWSUPWGT -- Used in tallying individuals on the file.

Users are strongly encouraged to refer to the User Guide for additional detailed information on how to use these weights, and how they were derived.

Mode of Data Collection:   computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI), computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI)
