Searching RCMD

When searching for a study on the RCMD website, enter any of the following into the search box:

The RCMD search engine then cross-references the search term you entered with the ICPSR thesaurus and produces the search result. RCMD users can also apply related terms to their search. Examples

Here are a few examples of RCMD search terms, the number of studies available and the associated search results:

Diagram 1: Search Term "Ethnicity"

Searching on ethnicity

Diagram 1 describes the process the RCMD search engine follows when a user initiates a search through the system. When a user inputs the search term "Ethnicity" into the search box, the system returns 346 studies. The user has the option of expanding his/her search by entering the related term "Race" into the search box. The expanded search now returns 851 studies. Examples of studies in this search result are studies 2987, 8512, and 23820. The user can also narrow his/her search by entering either of the related terms "Ethnic Groups" or "Cultural Diversity" which returns 134 and 6 studies respectively. Examples of studies using the search term "Ethnic Groups" are studies 2880, 24483, and 24502. Examples of studies using the search term "Cultural Diversity" are studies 7310 and 24502. It is important to note that some studies can be categorized under multiple search terms. In this diagram, an example of this is study 23820, which is listed under all three related terms.

Diagram 2: Search Term "Elections"

Searching on elections

Diagram 2 describes the process the RCMD search engine follows when a user initiates a search through the system. When a user inputs the search term "Elections" into the search box, the system returns 112 studies. The user has the option of expanding or narrowing his/her search by entering a related term into the search box. In this diagram, all the related terms shown are subcategories of the search term "Election" and will therefore each narrow the user's search results. The search term "Nation Election" returns 103 studies and examples of studies using this related term are studies 4684, 7763, and 3527. The search term "Primaries" returns 29 studies including studies 3913, 24603, and 26141. The search term "Presidential Election" returns 89 studies and examples of studies using this related term are studies 7581, 7763, and 9954. It is important to note that some studies can be categorized under multiple search terms. In this diagram, an example of this is study 7763 which is listed under "National Elections" and "Presidential Elections" but not "Primaries."

Diagram 3: Search Term "Education"

Searching on education

Diagram 3 describes the process the RCMD search engine follows when a user initiates a search through the system. When a user inputs the search term "Education" into the search box, the system returns 1640 studies. The user has the option of expanding or narrowing his/her search by entering a related term into the search box. In this diagram, all the related terms shown are subcategories of the search term "Education" and will therefore each narrow the user's search results. The search term "Higher Education" returns 1639 studies and examples of studies using this related term are studies 23820, 2987, and 21320. The search term "Secondary Education" returns 92 studies including studies 7896, 6448, and 7916. The search term "Bilingual Education" returns 16 studies and examples of studies using this related term are studies 3531 and 6230. It is important to note that even though some related terms are sub categories, some may return a much larger search result than others. In this diagram, an example of this is shown by comparing the number of search results using the related terms "Higher Education" and "Bilingual Education" 1639 and 16 respectively.
