ICPSR is committed to assisting data users in obtaining and utilizing the data from this complex collection. To that end, ICPSR hosted three week-long Summer Program Workshops, in 2005, 2006, and 2008.
The workshops in July 2005 and July 2006 were conducted by staff of PHDCN and ICPSR. The courses covered the study designs, data files, questionnaires, and sampling frames. To acquaint participants with the project's data, the project's Scientific Directors, Stephen Raudenbush, Robert Sampson, and Jeanne Brooks-Gunn and other PHDCN research staff presented overviews of the data and their latest findings on neighborhoods, families, and children's social development. The workshop provided participants with the opportunity to conduct exploratory analyses on the data pertaining to research questions of interest to them.
The workshop in June 2008 was conducted by ICPSR staff and Brady T. West, M.A., Lead Statistician, Center for Statistical Consultation and Research at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Day 1 of the course covered the project's designs, questionnaires, sampling frames, and data components. For the remainder of the course, Mr. West provided an introduction to applications of Hierarchical Linear Models using PHDCN Data. The workshop provided participants the opportunity to reproduce work presented in the lectures and conduct their own analyses addressing questions of interest to them using PHDCN data.
