All college campuses in the United States.
The data consist of an initial sample of 150 college
campuses and cities that reported their crime rates to the Federal
Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reports in 1978.
Crime rates and police strength for both cities and
campuses were collected from the 1978 Uniform Crime Reporting data.
Other campus variables were collected from three sources: (1)
Cass, James, and Max Birnbaum. COMPARATIVE GUIDE TO AMERICAN COLLEGES: FOR
STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND COUNSELORS. New York, NY: Harper and Row, 1979,
(2) BARRON'S PROFILES OF AMERICAN COLLEGES, AN IN-DEPTH STUDY: SUNY AT OSWEGO.
Woodbury, NY: Barron's Educational Series, 1978, and (3) THE COLLEGE BLUEBOOK
(seventh edition). The variable "Percent Black on Campus" was obtained from
the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Office for
Civil Rights. RACIAL, ETHNIC, AND SEX ENROLLMENT DATA FROM INSTITUTIONS OF
HIGHER EDUCATION, FALL 1978. Washington, DC: OCR, 1981. For universities
reporting incomplete information on campus variables, other editions of
these publications were consulted. These editions include: THE COLLEGE HANDBOOK,
1981-1982 (nineteenth edition), PETERSON'S ANNUAL GUIDE TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDY
DATA, and Cass, James, and Max Birnbaum. COMPARATIVE GUIDE TO AMERICAN COLLEGES;
GENERAL EDITION FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS. New York, NY: Harper and Row, 1973,
(sixth edition). City statistics were obtained from the 1980 United States
Census except for unemployment rates, which were obtained from the United
States Bureau of Labor Statistics. EMPLOYMENT AND EARNINGS, UNITED STATES,
1909-78. Washington, DC: United States Government Printing Office, 1979, and
United States Department of Commerce. Bureau of the Census. STATE AND
METROPOLITAN AREA DATA BOOK, 1979: A STATISTICAL ABSTRACT SUPPLEMENT\; REGIONS,
DIVISIONS, STATES, METROPOLITAN AREAS (SMSA'S), SMSA'S BY POPULATION SIZE
CLASS. Washington, DC: United States Government Printing Office, 1980.
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of
disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major
statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to
these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
Standardized missing values.
Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
