Summary

For this investigation of young men in Marion County, Oregon, subjects were interviewed in a 12-wave panel study beginning in their sophomore years of high school and continuing to age 30. The study sought to account for what happened as these individuals came of age. The research was concerned primarily with how success, trouble, and delinquency in the high school years exert an influence in later life careers. The first wave, conducted in the respondents' sophomore years of high school in 1964, consisted of a 200-item questionnaire. The second wave, the first in the longitudinal design, consisted of face-to-face interviews using a 225-item instrument during the senior year of high school. The ten subsequent waves of the study were conducted by mail, at nearly one-year intervals. The interview schedules are concerned with the issues of coming of age, such as family relations, school performance, educational plans, dating, drinking, drug use, military service, delinquency, offenses and dispositions (civilian and military), and Vietnam experiences.

  1. These data contain 36 162-character records per case.

Sample

In 1964, a large-scale survey of the youth of Marion County was conducted by a group of social service agencies in the area and collaboration staff from the University of Oregon. Among these respondents were 1,227 male sophomores that comprise the base population for the present study. In 1967, three groups were selected from this larger group to be interviewed. The first of these is a 25-percent random sample (N = 309) of the base population. The second consists of all of the individuals who had a delinquency record with the juvenile authorities (N = 303). The third consists of all young persons whose school records indicated they had withdrawn from school since 1964 (N = 127). During the course of the study, individuals who had had contact with the police as adults were assigned to a fourth group, the adult criminal group, which had grown to 379 persons by 1980.

1999-03-25 SAS and SPSS data definition statements are now available for this collection. In addition, ICPSR created variable and value labels for all variables in the file, and undocumented variables and values were labeled as such. ICPSR also created machine-readable (PDF) codebooks (Parts 2 and 3, Codebook for Records 1-16 and Codebook for Records 17-36) for all records in the file. Some useful documentation from the principal investigator and the original codebook for the Time 13 data were converted to machine-readable (PDF) form (Part 4). The entire set of original hardcopy documentation, which contains frequencies on only a subset of the sample, is available from ICPSR upon request in hardcopy format only.

1985-05-24 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
