Summary

This study collected data from both civil and criminal federal cases tried in the fiscal years 1962-1963 and 1963-1964. Procedural, jurisdictional, and other legal information is provided, including the disposition of each case.

Data Collection Notes

  1. Originally, more than one code value was punched in some of the columns. When these studies were taped by the Survey Research Archive, there was no program available to handle the multiple punches. If the punch was not valid on the IBM 360 system, it was converted to a blank. This is unfortunate because blanks were also used throughout these files to represent missing data.

    There are no present plans to recover the lost multiple punches. The user should be aware that a blank in a particular column could reflect a missing data code; or it could reflect substantive data that was lost during the taping process.

Part 1 and Part 3 contain 30 variables about Federal Civil Cases. Variables include details about the case, the nature of the suit, and the judgment.

Part 2 and Part 4 contain 30 variables about Federal Criminal Cases. Variables include criminal offense code, case information, and defendant information
