The main objectives of this data collection effort were to assemble a set of cross-nationally comparable microdata samples for Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) countries based on the 1990 national population and housing censuses in countries of Europe and North America, and to use these samples to study the social and economic conditions of older persons. The samples are designed to allow research on a wide range of issues related to aging, as well as on other social phenomena. Included in the Romania data collection are questions on type of dwelling unit and the presence of amenities, such as telephones, toilets, automobiles, baths/showers, washers, and TV sets, as well as the availability of utility systems. Also covered are the characteristics of the buildings within which these dwelling units were located. Demographic and socioeconomic information on household members includes age, sex, year of birth, household composition, marital status, number of children, education, income, religion, and occupation.

(1) The data are part of a set of microdata census samples assembled by the Population Activities Unit, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, with financial assistance from the United Nations Population Fund and the United States National Institute on Aging. The arrangements governing the release of data from this project stipulate that they should be used solely for social and behavioral science research. Also, the data and other materials are to be used solely for statistical analysis and reporting of aggregated information, and not for the investigation of specific individuals or organizations. Users should also understand that attempts to disseminate copies of the data, in whole or part, or to identify individual respondents may be subject to prosecution under applicable laws. Individual-based sample of 1,312,887 persons both noninstitutionalized and institutionalized with progressive oversampling with age, while retaining information on all persons co-residing in the noninstitutionalized sampled persons dwelling unit (N = 2,759,497).
