|Summary for Variable Group: Marital and relationship history|
|This group of variables is designed to capture information about the respondent's marriage(s) and/or current cohabitating relationship. Information is provided on the respondent's first two marriages as well as her current or most recent marriage. Variables include date of marriage, age at marriage, husband's age at marriage, husband's date of birth, whether the respondent lived with her husband prior to marriage, whether he had been married before, and how and when the marriage ended. For respondents who are currently cohabiting with an unmarried partner, much of the same information is available. Additional information is available for the respondent's current husband or cohabiting partner including race, education, whether he has children from a previous marriage, where those children live, and whether he financially supports them. This group also includes information on the respondent's cohabitation experience.

General Comparability Notes
Summary: This variable is largely comparable over time, though question structure differs between surveys, and universes vary due to changes in the classification of cohabiting relationships over time. In particular, informal marriages are included in 1973, 1976 and 1982. In nearly all cases, IFSS_AGEMARH_2 is computed from IFSS_CMMARRH_2 and IFSS_CMBIRTH.
In all years, IFSS_AGEMARH_2 is available for all respondents who have been married at least twice. For respondents who have been married exactly twice, this variable will be identical to IFSS_AGEMARH_CMR.
The classification of cohabiting relationships or informal marriages varies over time, resulting in slight universe changes. In the 1973, 1976, and 1982 NSFGs cohabiting relationships were coded as "informal marriages" and respondents who had been informally married are included in the relevant question universe. In the 1988, 1995, and 2002 NSFGs, only formal marriages are classified as marriages. Thus, second marriages in the 1973, 1976 and 1982 NSFGs may have been informal. Interested users can use IFSS_INFORM_2 to identify informal marriages in 1973, 1976, and 1982. Overall, however, the prevalence of cohabitation was low in the time periods covered by these surveys, so the vast majority of relationships described by this variable are formal marriages.
In all survey years except for the 2002 NSFG, IFSS_AGEMARH_2 is computed from IFSS_CMMARRH_2 and IFSS_CMBIRTH. See the comparability note for IFSS_CMMARRH_2 for more information on question text and structure and respondent universe changes over time. IFSS_AGEMARH_2 is computed by subtracting the respondent's century month of birth from the century month of marriage, dividing the difference by 12, and taking the integer part of the resulting value. Thus, IFSS_AGEMARH_2=trunc((IFSS_CMMARRH_2-IFSS_CMBIRTH)/12), where trunc(X) truncates X to just the integer part of X.
In the 2002 NSFG, respondents were first asked the date for each of up to five marriages. Respondents who did not know the date of their second marriage were then asked how old they were when they got married the second time. These responses were incorporated into the century month date of marriage variable by NCHS staff, but the computed age does not always agree with the reported age. Because of this discrepancy, compute from IFSS_CMMARRH_2 when it is available, and use age at first marriage when it is not.
Data Structure Summary:
From 1955 to 2002, IFSS_AGEMARH_CMR, and IFSS_AGEMARH_1 are defined for all ever-married respondents. IFSS_AGEMARH_2 is defined for women who have been married at least twice, but not for women who have been married only once. IFSS_AGEMARH_CMR always contains information on the current or most recent marriage, regardless of what number that marriage is. IFSS_AGEMARH_CMR will contain duplicate information if the respondent has been married less than three times.
