Survey of Federal Government Employees, November 1991-February 1992 [United States] (ICPSR 9983)

The Survey of Federal Employees is the Office of Personnel Management's first major survey of the work force since 1983. The questionnaire was designed to provide policy-makers with information that was not available from existing sources. Questions covered various personnel areas such as employee characteristics, employees' satisfaction with their jobs, supervisors, and organizations, performance management, training, work schedule arrangements, leave benefits, and dependent care responsibilities and the ways in which employees fulfill these responsibilities.

Universe: All federal white-collar employees in the group of federal agencies participating in the survey. The federal agencies that were contacted are listed in Table 1, Appendix A, of the "Original ICPSR Codebook, 1993 Release."

Data Collection Notes:
The SPSS statements created and disseminated by the original data producer to assist in data analysis and/or replication of the analysis results reported in Appendix B of the "Original ICPSR Codebook, 1993 Release" are included as a separate section in the current ICPSR codebook. These statements are designed to assist data users in selecting respondents by sample or subsample, and in weighting the main sample.
Sample: The sampling plan for this study included four samples - a primary sample and three specialized subsamples (one for assessing employee values and two for evaluating pay reform). The primary sample, consisting of 56,767 Federal white-collar employees, was stratified by department and by pay category. The SPSS commands created and distributed by the data producer and included in the current ICPSR codebook contain syntax that may be used to select respondents by sample or subsample.

Weight: A weight variable is not included in the dataset. However, the SPSS commands created and disseminated by the data producer and incorporated as a separate section in the current ICPSR codebook include SPSS syntax for weighting the main sample only.
Mode of Data Collection: on-site questionnaire
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Original ICPSR Release: 1993-05-13
- 2016-01-21 SPSS, SAS, and Stata setup files, as well as SPSS and Stata system files, a SAS transport (CPORT) file, a tab-delimited data file, and an R data file have been added to the collection. The codebook was updated.
