The accepted Union Army recruits in this file were drawn from a larger collection, UNION ARMY RECRUITS IN WHITE REGIMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES, 1861-1865 (ICPSR 9425).
Methodology
Sample: Random sample of all rejected recruits from the Union Army, and a subset of 4,952 cases from a one-stage cluster sampling of white companies in the Union Army. Clusters were companies, with each company having an equal probability of being included.
Data Source:
Civil War medical examination records located in the Navy and Old Army Branch, Record Group #110, National Archives, and Regimental Description Books of the Union Army
