Population of Counties, Towns, and Cities in the United States, 1850 and 1860 (ICPSR 9424)
Principal Investigator(s): Fishman, Michael J., University of Chicago. Center for Population Economics
Summary: This data collection contains information about the population of each county, town, and city of the United States in 1850 and 1860. Specific variables include tabulations of white, black, and slave males and females, and aggregate population for each town. Foreign-born population, total population of each county, and centroid latitudes and longitudes of each county and state were also compiled. (more info)

- 1962
Universe: All United States counties, towns, and cities in 1850 and 1860. The list was obtained from published data in POPULATION OF THE UNITED STATES IN 1860.
Data Types: census/enumeration
Data Collection Notes:
The data contain alphabetic codes.
Methodology
Data Source:
POPULATION OF THE UNITED STATES IN 1860, WASHINGTON DC: Government Printing Office, 1864
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Created variable labels and/or value labels.
Version(s)
Original ICPSR Release: 1991-03-05
