This collection contains information on live births in the United States during calendar year 1980. The natality data in this file are a component of the vital statistics collection effort maintained by the federal government. Geographic variables of residence for births include the state, county, city, population, division and state subcode, Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA), and metropolitan-nonmetropolitan county. Other variables include the race and sex of the child, the age of the mother, mother's education, place of delivery, person in attendance, and live birth order. The summary variables in the file include total number of births occurring in the country, the ratio of births to married women, the ratio of births to unmarried women, number of live births by birth weight, total number of births to United States residents, births by attendant, and place of delivery.

In preparing the data for this collection, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has removed direct identifiers and characteristics that might lead to identification of data subjects. As an additional precaution, NCHS requires, under section 308(d) of the Public Health Service Act(42U.S.C.242m), that data collected by the NCHS not be used for any purpose other than statistical analysis and reporting. NCHS further requires that analysts not use the data to learn the identity of any persons or establishments and that the director of NCHS be notified if any identities are inadvertently discovered. ICPSR member institutions and other users ordering the data from ICPSR are expected to adhere to these restrictions.

2008-10-06 A dataset for Summary Record 1 records and a dataset for Summary Record 2 records have been extracted from the original EBCDIC file and replace ICPSR's original distributions of the collection.

1991-05-03 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:

  • Created variable labels and/or value labels.
  • Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
