This data collection is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that evaluates the Reagan presidency and solicits opinions on a variety of political and social issues. Topics covered include the future of the next generation of Americans, protection of the environment, federal spending, abortion, income tax rates, discrimination against homosexuals, the federal budget deficit, the death penalty for major drug dealers, the use of United States naval vessels to protect foreign-owned oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, and important problems facing the country such as AIDS, arms control, and hunger. In addition, respondents were queried about their views on the candidates and campaigns for the 1988 presidential election. Questions asked of respondents include whether they had a favorable or unfavorable opinion of the various presidential candidates, whom the Republicans and the Democrats should nominate for president, whom Michael Dukakis should pick as his vice-presidential running mate, and the ability of Bush and Dukakis to deal wisely with a difficult international crisis. Background information on individuals includes party affiliation, age, union membership, income, sex, marital status, religious preference, education, and race.
