Scope of Study

Summary:   This survey was conducted prior to Pope John Paul II's visit to the United States in September 1987. Respondents were asked for their opinions on Pope John Paul and on a number of moral issues including abortion, homosexuality, alternative means of conception, birth control, and the involvement of religious leaders in politics. Opinions also were sought on certain policies of the Roman Catholic Church that prohibit priests from marrying and women from becoming priests. Respondents were queried regarding their religious upbringing and current practice, and those who identified themselves as Catholics were asked additional questions relating to the Pope and religious issues. Demographic characteristic of respondents are included.
