Social Roots of Art: Metropolitan Conditions and the Development of Art, 1970-1980 (ICPSR 8869)
Principal Investigator(s): Blau, Judith R.; Blau, Peter M.
Summary:
This collection offers data on social structure and social conditions in SMSAs of the United States and examines how these conditions influence cultural development. In addition to presenting a broad range of census data aggregated at the SMSA level, the collection also provides detailed variables on metropolitan art institutions and funding for those institutions. Structural variables, which are supplied for both 1970 and 1980, include detailed items on marital status, occupation, ethnicity, language, education, age, race, and income. Art variables for each SMSA include total number of artists, art museums, galleries, dance companies, theaters, orchestras, motion picture theaters, concerts, and radio station formats. Many of the art categories are broken down further into detailed specialties. For example, in addition to the variable that tabulates total number of artists in each SMSA, there are separate variables for the number of actors, authors, dancers, designers, musicians and composers, painters and sculptors, and photographers. Similarly, information is presented on many different types of galleries, such as galleries specializing in paintings, graphic arts, furniture, oriental art, porcelain, antiquities, etc. Information is also provided in this collection on arts participation and attendance.
