This survey focuses on the New York City Police Department. Respondents were asked for their opinions on police performance, Commissioner Benjamin Ward, use of force in making arrests, and restrictions on use of force hampering and endangering police. A topic receiving major emphasis was the incident in which Mrs. Eleanor Bumpers was shot and killed by police. Questions on this topic included whether the officer involved was justified in the shooting, the probability that he would be found guilty of manslaughter, and whether the requests for transfer of all emergency service police should be granted.
