New York City residents were asked questions concerning their attitudes towards living in New York City, their assessments of city services, and their opinions of New York City leaders and the Governor of New York. In addition, respondents were probed for their opinions on crime and what causes crime in New York City, what measures people take to protect themselves, and whether the respondent or a family member has ever been a victim of a crime. Demographic information is also included.

2011-07-13 SAS, SPSS, and Stata setups have been added to this data collection.
1986-08-29 ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
