Principal Investigator(s): United States Department of Education. National Center for Education Statistics
The Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS)series was designed to provide comprehensive information on various aspects of postsecondary education in the United States and its territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside the United States. A component of the HEGIS XIX survey package, this data collection furnishes final finance data for 3,302 colleges and universities and their branches throughout the United States. Information is supplied on current funds revenues by source, current funds expenditures and mandatory transfers by functions, physical plant assets, indebtedness on physical plant, details of endowment assets, changes in fund balances, tuition and fees, federal grants, local grants, and annuity additions and deductions.

Scope of Study
Date of Collection:
Universe: All postsecondary institutions operating during 1984 in the United States and its territories (American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the Marshall Islands) and Department of Defense schools outside of the United States.
Data Types: survey data
Data Collection Notes:
(1)Survey forms were distributed to 3,330 institutions and 2,880 usable responses were received. Twenty-eight institutions that were new to the HEGIS universe in fiscal year 1983 and that did not respond in fiscal years 1983 and 1984 are not included in this file. Data for 409 of the remaining institutions were imputed on the basis of data they submitted in fiscal year 1983, while data for the remaining 13 institutions were imputed through a peer selection process. (2) The codebook is provided by ICPSR as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site.
Extent of Processing: ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection:
- Checked for undocumented or out-of-range codes.
Original ICPSR Release: 1986-11-07
- 2005-02-03 The data file has been replaced by a new complete data file which contains more variables providing detailed information about the institutions. SAS, SPSS and Stata data definition statements have been added to the study.
