Summary:   Data in this collection document the National Preventive Dentistry Demonstration Program. The program provided dental examinations and preventive treatment of school children. Information such as sex, age, race, grade, and program site are given for each child, as well as data on the specific treatment regimen for the child. Data Collection Notes:

The National Preventive Dentistry Demonstration Program was conducted jointly by the Rand Corporation and the American Fund for Dental Health.

Sample:   Data are provided for children and schools participating in the National Preventive Dentistry Demonstration Program. Participants were located in ten sites, with two sites in each of five regions of the United States (northeast, southeast, central, southwest, and northwest). One site in each region had a fluoridated water supply, and the other had a nonfluoridated water supply. There were two types of cohorts in the study. The longitudinal cohort consisted of those children who were in grades one, two, and five at the beginning of the program. Children in the longitudinal cohort received preventive care and/or examinations throughout the five years of the program. Children in the cross-sectional cohort were in grades three, four, six, seven, and eight at the beginning of the study, and received examinations in the baseline year but did not participate in further treatment or examinations. An additional cross-sectional cohort consisted of children in grades one through nine who were examined in the final year of the study. These children had not previously been participants in the program. Approximately 82 percent of students eligible for the program received parental consent for participation.
