Scope of Study

Summary:   These data were collected at polling places on Election Day, 1982, and selected respondents completed a self-administered questionnaire. Demographic information about the respondent is included in addition to statistics on voting behavior. The data file has 46 variables for each of the 24,438 records but can be broken into fifteen parts: 13 states in which enough locations were chosen to provide valid state samples (Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin), other locations throughout the U.S., and a sample of locations in Illinois Congressional District 18. With the exception of two Illinois locations which fall into both the states sample and the one for C.D. 18, these samples do not overlap.
