Summary:
These data are from the 20-, 15-, and 5-percent samples of the 1970 United States Census of Population and Housing, and contain tabulations of population characteristics such as education, occupation, income, citizenship, and vocational training. Twenty selected geographic summary areas -- including states, counties, standard metropolitan statistical areas, urbanized areas, and places -- constitute the units of observation. Separate tallies are shown for whites, Blacks, Hispanic American (referred to as Spanish Americans in the 1970 Census), and the total population.

Data Collection Notes:
(1) The number of cases (summary areas) varies by state. For the entire United States, there are about 13,000 summary areas. Each case comprises up to 64 records and has a maximum of 14,788 variables. (2) The data were provided to ICPSR by the Center of Demography and Ecology at the University of Wisconsin. (3) Part numbers correspond to FIPS codes of states and are not consecutive. (4) The codebook, Part 70, Codebook for All Parts, consists of Parts 1 and 2 of the 1970 Census Users' Guide published by the Bureau of the Census. (5) In the 1970 Census Users' Guide, this data collection is named "Fourth Count Population Summary Tape, File C." (6) The codebook is provided by ICPSR as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided on the ICPSR Web site.
